Sternberger Elementary gets ‘topped’

Posted

Sternberger Elementary School students, parents, faculty and community leaders participated in a Topping Off ceremony, signifying the completion of the new building’s frame on the site of the original Sternberger school, which opened in 1949 on Holden Road in Greensboro.

Before construction crews hoisted the final steel beam into place, scores of people applied their signatures for posterity. The old Sternberger Elementary was razed in 2024. The school’s student body has been in temporary educational quarters at the former Kiser Middle School. The new elementary school will open in 2027.

Funded by a voter approved $300 million bond measure in 2020, the $56 million construction of a new Sternberger Elementary was part of a facilities study which identified an imperative to build, reconstruct and/or fully renovate schools across Guilford County at a cost of $2 billion. This also includes making safety and technology upgrades to schools. In 2022, voters approved a $1.7 billion bond measure to fulfill the construction needs of the school district.
