The Northern Guilford Nighthawks flexed their offensive muscles in a decisive 41-14 home victory over the Northwest Guilford Vikings. A dominant first half, which saw the Nighthawks score 20 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second, sealed the win early.
Northern Guilford’s rushing attack was the star of the show, racking up 228 yards on the ground. Senior Amare Akers led the charge with a monster performance, carrying the ball 13 times for 160 yards and an impressive three touchdowns. Junior Christian Leach also found the end zone, adding 45 yards on eight carries.
While the ground game was the primary weapon, the Nighthawks also got contributions through the air. Quarterback Jaxson Kemp completed 6 of 13 passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Both of those touchdown passes went to junior William Preston, who also had 33 receiving yards on two catches.
The Vikings struggled to find their rhythm, managing only a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters. They were held to just 24 yards rushing on 12 carries. Junior Rakem Hammock was a bright spot, leading the team in receiving with 56 yards and a touchdown on eight catches. Easton Dean also contributed with a touchdown reception.
On defense, Northwest Guilford’s Rob Lange was a force to be reckoned with, tallying seven tackles, three for a loss, and a sack. Austin Jackson recorded an interception for the Vikings.
The Nighthawks’ victory was a complete team effort, with their offense controlling the clock and their defense stifling the Vikings’ attack. Northern Guilford’s win, coupled with their explosive first-half performance, sets a strong tone for the rest of their season.
Up next, Northern will travel to the Raiders of Reagan High School in Pfafftown, N.C., this Friday at 7 p.m. Northwest will have a homestand against Richmond Senior High. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
