North Carolina Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt emphasized the vital role of community colleges in driving workforce development. On a hands-on tour of Guilford Technical Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Education program, she met with students on solid career pathways from their work-study at the state’s third largest community college.

“I can’t wait to keep visiting and highlighting these schools and take what I learn back to the community college board and to the legislature,” Hunt said after her tour of GTCC’s Welding Technology and Computer Integrated Machining labs. She is a member of both the State Board of Education and Community College Board, emphasizing Career and College-Ready Graduate Programs.

GTCC is the lieutenant governor’s second stop on a tour of the state’s 58 community colleges, under her Future-Ready North Carolina program. “The platform outlines how we can make sure our state is prepared for the future by tackling our childcare crisis and investing in our people through workforce development,” Hunt said. “A major part of the platform centers around making sure our community colleges have the funding they need to continue their great work like the programs we saw today that we know are very expensive.”

Apprentice students enrolled in the North Carolina Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (N.C. FAME) Program served as official tour guides, engaging Hunt and GTCC President Anthony Clarke with mechanical processes and training stations in the massive building adjacent to the Jamestown campus.

During the visit, Hunt spoke with apprentices employed in the area. Guilford Technical Community College is the host school for The First in Flight Chapter of the North Carolina Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (NC FAME) Program. Students in the program attend classes two days a week and work three days at a sponsor employer including ABCO Automation, Jowat Adhesives, MasterBrand Cabinets, Toyota, ZIEHL-ABEGG, P&G, and WestRock.
