The City of Greensboro’s Contact Center is serving as a centralized collection point for residents, groups and businesses who wish to volunteer with tornado cleanup. City’s Contact Center: (336) 373-CITY (2489).
As parts of Greensboro recover from Sunday’s tornado, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro is supporting residents by collecting donations of the most urgently-needed items and recruiting volunteers to assist with the cleanup efforts. Anyone wishing to volunteer to assist with cleanup should call the City of Greensboro hotline, (336) 373-2489 for directions. Those wishing to join the Habitat Greensboro volunteer team can contact volunteer coordinator Chris Tippens at (336) 707-8050.
Due to damage from Sunday’s tornado, the City of Greensboro will relax yard waste preparation rules for residents who have collection service on Thursday, April 19, and Friday, April 20. Yard waste brought to the curb will be collected as part of the regular collection service on those days.
All City collection services and the White Street Landfill will operate normal schedule on Tuesday, April 17. Residents and businesses should expect delays at the landfill due to a high volume of people dropping off yard waste.
Greensboro Public Library is offering safe places and extra children’s activities while many Guilford County schools remain closed. “For many residents in the affected areas, the public library is a gathering place that provides a sense of stability especially during this period of upheaval. Of course we have books, movies and music, but we are also providing games and extra activities for children displaced from their normal school routine,” says Director Brigitte Blanton.
The McGirt-Horton Branch, 2501 Phillips Ave., was closed briefly due to a power outage, but is now open. Contrary to previous reports, the facility did not sustain damage during the storm.

“The response we’ve gotten from people wanting to volunteer speaks volumes about the character of our community,” said Assistant City Manager Chris Wilson. “As we continue to survey the affected areas and assess the damage and establish a game plan, Guilford County will take the volunteer information and determine where efforts are most needed, and where it is safe for them to assist. We don’t want volunteers to self-deploy and put themselves in danger.
The City of Greensboro’s Glenwood Recreation Center, 2010 Coliseum Blvd., opened as an emergency shelter on Sunday, April 15. A shuttle is available for residents from affected areas to and from the center. Pickup points for the shuttle are available at the intersections of:
The Salvation Army of Greensboro has dispatched staff to the affected area to support residents and clients of our Rapid Rehousing program. Salvation Army will be offering them shelter at the Center of Hope until they can be placed, again, in permanent housing.
The Salvation Army’s mobile feeding unit will also be in the area to serve relief workers and families who are working to reclaim their personal belongings to clear their property of the debris from the storm.
Grocery bags will be available for immediate food needs, as well as clothing and household items, when families need these items.

U-Haul Company of Central North Carolina is offering 30 days of free self-storage to residents who have been impacted by the high winds and severe storms associated with a tornado that touched down Sunday in Guilford County.
