Eastern Guilford Girls and Southwest Guilford Boys Win Guilford County Middle School Track & Field ChampionshipsBy Joe Daniels, Sports Director / May 13, 2022
The 2022 Guilford County Middle School Track & Field Championships were held Thursday, May 5 at Dudley’s Tarpley Stadium. The Middle School meet was comprised of 10 events featuring 17 of the county’s 22 Middle Schools: Allen Jay, Allen Middle, Eastern, Ferndale, Hairston, Jackson, Kernodle, Kiser, Lincoln, Mendenhall, Penn-Griffin, Southeast, Southern, Southwest, Swann, Welborn and Western.
In girls’ competition, Eastern Guilford Middle edged out Allan Jay with 65 points to 62. Southwest Middle finished third with 47 points. Despite not placing first in any events, the Eastern Lady Wildcats piled up points finishing second though fourth led by Madison Williamson, Shot Put 2nd 27-feet-1ʺ, Kari Parker and Mya Ayanna Hodges, High Jump 2nd and 4th, Maliyah Clark and Mya Jackson 4th and 5th Long Jump, Kari Parker 3rd 100-200m dashes, Ayanna Hodges 3rd 800m, Kylie Herbin 4th 1600m, the 4×100 and 4x200m relay teams finished fourth. Maciah Barnes, a seventh grader at Allan Jay Prep Academy of High Point had an outstanding performance capturing first places the 100m dash in 13.10 seconds and leaping 14-feet-05” in the Long jump.
In boys events Southwest Guilford Middle compiled 72 points to Mendenhalls 61, followed by Eastern Guilford Middle with 34 points. The Cowboys were led by four first places: Faneal Tsegay had an outstanding double-double capturing the 800m (2:19.32) and 1600m (5:05.05) runs. Robbie Lane was another double winner 400m (57.38secs.) and the Shot Put 40-feet-09”, 4x200m relay clamed fourth (1:41.79). Kerry Hammock claimed second in the Long Jump and third (11.83) in the 100m dash along with teammate Caleb Casey (11.93) finishing fourth.
