The Greatest Homecoming On Earth

By Deidre Dorsey, Peacemaker Intern / October 23, 2015

It’s that time of year when alumni and students of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University takeover Greensboro with what is known as the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth.” Homecoming at N.C. A&T, which is popularly referred to simply as GHOE, is a celebratory week replete with events for former students, current students, and all other visitors. This year, GHOE’s lineup of events includes the usual university-sponsored shows, concerts, and fan fests. However, keeping up with all of the festivities during the week may be a bit overwhelming to some, so here is a short list of the most popular events to attend this GHOE.

5. Club Events – Various dates, times and places during GHOE
Although club events are not sponsored by the university, the club scene during GHOE is a main attraction for students, alumni and visitors and it is a big reason why A&T’s homecoming is such a good time. Some clubs remain bustling and active for the entire week, hosting day and night parties to cater to every patron. There are luxe affairs for alumni, posh parties for the 21 and up crowd, and many other lively events for all others to enjoy. Tickets are going fast, so if you’re planning on partying get yours now.

4. Homecoming Coronation – Sun. Oct. 18, Corbett Sports Center at 5 p.m.
Dubbed “An Enchanted Evening Where Dreams Come True” this year, homecoming coronation is usually the first event to kick-off GHOE. Students are invited to don their best semi-formal attire and attend the official crowning ceremony for Mister A&T, Jamal Averett, Miss A&T, Myja Gary, and their royal court. Titleholders from the previous year return home for the crowning as well, and representative Misters and Misses from various other campus organizations are honored for the titles glossily etched in their sashes. This night of opulence will end with a reception to follow.

3. National Pan-Hellenic Step Show – Fri. Oct. 23, Greensboro Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.
Every year, the homecoming step show is always one of the top events that students and many alumni attend. During the show, Greensboro Coliseum is vibrant with music and brightly-colored attire representative of one’s Greek affiliation. This year, the Greeks of A&T will stomp it out to compete in the “Battle for the Throne,” to determine who will receive bragging rights until next GHOE.

2. Football Game – Sat. Oct. 24, Aggie Stadium at 1 p.m.
After Saturday morning’s parade down Lindsay Street and tailgate by Murphy Hall, Aggies will suit up to play the Bisons of Howard University at this year’s homecoming game. Homecoming games at A&T are overflowing with food, fans, vendors, and music from the Blue & Gold Marching Machine. With the Bisons being a MEAC rival, the game will be filled with a fun, competitive spirit amongst fans and marching bands.

1. Homecoming Concerts – Sat. Oct. 24, Greensboro Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.
By far, the homecoming event that is most popular among students is the homecoming concert. Coordinated by the Student Government Association and Student Union Activities Board of the university, this year’s “Thrill Seekers” concert is sure to be energized and entertaining with Future, Rae Sremmurd, and Wale sharing the stage at Greensboro Coliseum. The original line-up has received a few revisions, such as Shy Glizzy replacing Fetty Wap after the artist’s motorcycle accident last month, and Young Dro replacing Young Dolph due to a schedule conflict. However, the eclectic group of performers will definitely make this concert one to top.

This is one week of activities not to miss.
