Panthers, Pirates and Storm advance in NCHSAA play-offs

Dudley Panthers

The Dudley Panthers enjoyed home field advantage as they faced the McDowell Titans in the N.C. High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) football playoffs. Dudley scored on its first three possessions against the Titans in a 54-0 rout at Tarpley Stadium.
The Panthers (11-1) unleashed seven running backs who amassed 407 rushing yards and five touchdowns against the 16th seeded Titans. Senior running backConnell Young led the offensive charge with 218 yards (127 passing and 91 rushing), two touchdowns and two two-point conversions. Quarterback Hendon Hooker finished the first half 8-of-12 for 256 yards and two touchdowns. The Panthers’ defense recorded its third shutout of the season.
Dudley will host Southwest Guilford (6-6) at home Friday night for a second-round match with the Cowboys.

Page Pirates

The Page Pirates also took advantage of home field advantage in the opening round of state high school 4-AA football playoffs. The Pirates defeated the Lumberton Pirates 62-20 at Marion Kirby Stadium, Friday, Nov. 13.
Junior running back Javon Leake rushed for a game-high 205 yards and two touchdowns propelling Page to a win. Early in the second quarter the Pirates advanced 80 yards in seven plays, capped off by Leake’s 22-yard run. The PAT was good by Harrison Kiser.
Lumberton answered with a five-yard quarterback keeper by Braylan Grice. Page’s three-second quarter touchdowns broke the game open. Page quarterback Will Jones had a career-high rushing three touchdowns on runs of 20, 10, and 47 yards. The Pirates will travel this Friday to third-seeded Wake Forest for their second round matchup.

Southern Guilford Storm

Southern Guilford senior Kenyon Taylor ran the opening kickoff back inside the Southern Lee ten-yard line setting the tone in a 51-3 romp. Taylor scored on a 54-yard pass and had two interceptions. The Storm (10-2) scored on a kickoff return and had three interceptions on defense.
“I thought we played outstanding defense,” Southern Guilford coach Darryl Brown said. “We stopped the run, which made them have to put the ball in the air.” Southern Guilford quarterback Rayshawn Knight completed four passes for 139 yards in the first half. Southern will host No. 12 Wilson Fike, a 28-8 winner over No. 3 Hampstead Topsail.
Other local teams playing this weekend include: No. 9 Jacksonville at No. 1 High Point Andrews (Class 2-A East); No. 13 Northern Guilford at No.5 Asheboro (Class 3-AA East); No. 13 Northwest Guilford at No. 5 Fuquay-Varina (Class 4-AA East).
