Dudley, Northern & Page advance in football playoffs

The South Caldwell Raiders played the Dudley Panthers to a 6-6 first half tie. Dudley settled into its groove as the Panthers scored 36 unanswered points to post a 42-6 NCHSAA Class 4-A playoff win against the Raiders at Tarpley Stadium. The Panthers opened the second half to score on consecutive drives.Panther Simeon Gatling scored his second and third touchdowns of the night increasing Dudley’s lead by 14. The first occured on a nine-yard run followed by a 31 yarder on a fourth-and-one. Senior tailback Connell Young finished with 198 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Panthers who have amassed a 31-1 record on the season. The Panthers will host undefeated (13-0) Charlotte Catholic with the winner earning a trip to the state championship.

With the Northern Guilford Nighthawks clinging to a 21-10 lead over top-seeded Fayetteville Terry Sanford early in the third quarter, the Nighthawks stopped the Bulldogs on a fourth-and-one at the goal line. Northern proceeded to march 99 yards, using 24 plays, on a 13 minute scoring drive with Caleb Freeman scoring his second touchdown of the night. That score pushed the Nighthawks to a 28-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. With the victory, Northern snapped a 10 game winning streak by Terry Sanford. The No.13 Nighthawks will travel to No.3 Southern Durham (11-4) to play Friday, December 4.

The Page Pirates defeated the Richmond Raiders 49-33 to advance to the NCHSAA 4-A East Regional Final. The Pirates led 21-12 at the break and outscored the Raiders 28-21 during second half play. Junior running back Javon Leake and senior wide receiver Diondre Overton scored two touchdowns apiece in Page’s victory. Leake had an outstanding game rushing for 242 yards on 28 carries. The No. 6 Pirates will travel to No.1 Middle Creek (13-0) this Friday.
