Volunteers distribute produce to families in need

The Greensboro Alumnae Delta Cultural Center Inc. (GADCEC) is distributing free boxes of fresh produce in the Southern and Eastern areas of Greensboro designated as food deserts and where the most cases of the novel Coronavirus exist.

Under a $47,500 grant from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES) administered through Guilford County, GADCEC members and volunteers began the drive-by food distribution at Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA and Bessemer Elementary School. Local farmers packed the produce in sturdy boxes for distribution.

In Greensboro, 200 boxes are designated at each of the food distribution sites, which are scheduled as follows: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 18, Renaissance Shopping Center, 2515 Phillips Avenue; Sept. 25, Rankin Elementary School, 1501 Spry Street; Oct 2, Otis L. Hairston Middle School, 3911 Naco Road; and Oct. 9, Sedgefield Elementary School, 2905 Groometown Rd, Greensboro. Additional venues will be announced for November.

“With several areas in Greensboro experiencing a large number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, and are in a food desert, it was fitting to write the grant for food insecurities,” said Bettye Jenkins, GADCEC president. “Many families have not returned to work or work minimum wage jobs with large families, needing access to nutritious home ground fruits and vegetables.”
GADCED is an independent community service organization whose members are affiliated with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
