Thousands of people gathered in downtown Greensboro last weekend for the National Folk Festival.

Masters of folk music performed before capacity crowds on seven stages. This was the first time the festival was held in Greensboro. The Gate City will sponsor the event through 2017. Approximately 300 musicians, dancers, puppeteers, storytellers, potters and craftspeople participated with more than 40 groups showcasing their talents.

Some of the artists on hand to perform were gospel, soul and R&B singer Mavis Staples; folk musician and Grammy Award winning Greensboro native Rhiannon Giddens; Cherokee storyteller Lloyd Arneach, Newfoundland traditional musicians, The Dardanelles; pianist Henry Butler & Jambalaya, The Jeff Little Trio on piano and blues performers, John Dee Holeman with Williette Hinton. Festival attendees have declared the Folk Festival a resounding success and many are looking forward to next year’s performances.

Several festival attendees proclaimed, “It was the best party ever, we’ll be back.”
